Step Up 3D Review

Yes I just watched it. Yeah wow I was so late... Now that we established that, this is the best use of 3D since Avatar (not the "Ank Mas Erbender").. and my drawing..

Still need some works, but I think i get the hang of pen a bit...

Step Up 3D won't win any awards for its story or acting. Let's face it, they suck. The barely there acting and script are not the main draw. When one come to cinema, buy tickets for the movie and put on those silly glasses, they do not except cerebral dramatic movie. They are all there for the choreography, sound tracks and see stuffs flying to their faces.

The story is cliche and predictable. There is this crew, they enter a battle, one of them betrays the others, bla bla bla. The cast are also mixed bag, I don't know whether they hired amateur actors who can dance or dancers who try to act. The relationships are not believable, the script is bordering on annoying.

The story may suck, but the view is great

It's not all bad though. The scenes with camcorder "why you dance" are slightly better, maybe it's because they actually like to dance. Moose (Adam Sevani) is better here than Step Up 2, he seems more real somehow. Maybe because he got more screen time or he got experience from previous movie. His acting isn't all that great, but I don't think he acted much, he looks like he is just having fun. The dude is crowd's (girls') favorite. I heard many shouted "Kyyaaa, Moose! Moose!!"

His story is more relate-able, I think the demography of the movie can understand the irony of "doing something you like" and "doing something you should do". The most important thing is he looks normal, like someone you can chat with. Can you imagine bumping the likes of Channing Tatum and carry out normal conversation?..

It doesn't make sense that the stage is flooded, but the dance is simply awesome...

And then it's the choreographs' duty to push the movie forward, and they didn't disappoint. It reminds me of Chocolate or Ong Bak, when the gravity defying fast paced choreographs hit the screen, it's all worth it. The dances are visual delights, easily among the best of dance movies, if not the best. It's truly a showcase of talent and the director, for everything he didn't do right, got some amazing creative ideas. Simple yet effective.

The first battle with Red Hook uses dust, just dust, and also a girl who looks like she is slapping you. The second battle with Gwai is a homage to Step Up 2 water dance, it's cool. The one doing robot is simply hilarious. There is a tribute to Gene Kelly musical score of old, almost five minutes continuous shot of Moose and his girl on the street of New York. And the final battle with laser outfit is cleverly made. When it goes to high gear, the dances alone justify the extra price.

The sound tracks are also superb. Everyone should already know of Flo Rida - Club Can't Handle Me by now. The others are also great, I especially like Madcon - Begging (2nd battle). It's a synergy, the movie support the tracks vice versa, this is a great way to build a hype.

When in doubt, add laser

Step Up 3D is flawed, it's a shame it didn't get better script or more experienced actor like Antonio Banderas in "Take The Lead". But the purpose of a movie should be to entertain. In the end, it manages to do just that. Rate 7,5.
