"The Winner Stands Alone" Review

Recently I saw a very intelligent blog from one who is younger and smarter than me. I also saw an internet game site used Kant maxim principle for article. I used it for my thesis, never thought it could be done for games. I write notes to practice English, but I think I just slacking off and never write anything profound and thought provoking. So here it is.. aghhhh don't leave:icondesperateplz: It won't be boring, I promise.

"The Winners Stands Alone" is a book by Paulo Coelho. The story follows a tycoon's attempt to win back his ex-wife from by killing random strangers on Caness Festival. Think of it as 24 + Lost staring Yagami Light. The first things I noticed are Paulo Coelho is a religious man, his concern for this declining world and he already experienced the pleasure and, more importantly, the pain of this world. He does use religion philosophy, but rather force dogmatic propaganda and indoctrination, he simply shows a point of view, and whether the readers accept it is entirely up to them.

The timeline itself only lasts one day, from night to night. It doesn't feel rushed and he managed to maintain the flow quiet brilliantly. The main character, Igor is somewhat an enigma. He is ex Russian military, one with dark past and has the money, motivation and means to obtain whatever he desire. He genuinely believes that God has guided him to the point of almost delusional and to win back his loved one, he simply must destroy worlds. He thinks that after his ex-wife understands he would do anything for her, she would beg him to take her back.

The woman of his desire is Ewa. A woman who is calm, elegant, brlliant and caring. At first she sounded too good to be true, too perfect and cold even. She is married to Hamid, an Arabic billionaire and world renowned designer. Hamid shares too many resemblances to Igor, he has the same dedication and intelligent, it's one of the reasons Ewa chose him, not because of love but safety. There are many other casts from many backgrounds, each is a representation of a world.

The great thing about this novel is how Paulo managed to critique human arrogance and ego. The setting in Cannes Festival itself is a mockery of vanity. There are many things that so shallow but we regard them as important:

If you have excessive love for wealth and worldly materials,

If you have unhealthy admiration for (read worship) a superstar / model / singer / actor,

If you must text message for every waking minute of your life to look busy and "exist"

If you think newest fashion, jewelry, yacht, sport car etc are things that must be obtained to measure your success

If you envy someone..

You must read this book. It's literally a sword aim at human vanity.

It's a man opinion of the world, of course. But you could do worse than to hear advices from international bestseller who used real life examples as reference.

This book is perfect for age 15 - 25, it's a life lesson that we don't get from school, college or even our relatives. For the price of 50k, you can read inspirational thought of human life that you can use for a lifetime. Please if you still read Twilight, Vampire Diary or whatever, open your mind.

Every character is representation of a life, a world. They feel the failure and success, an amalgamation of dedication, faith and passion. These will prepare you for real life, it will not easy. It's daunting and quiet honestly will taint or ruin your view of this "beautiful" world. You might be offended by his opinions, I'll be honest it's harsh and bitter. You might read description of your habit and feel like he's bashing you for your lifestyle. But read and learn, there is logical truth in his words. I might not experienced what he wrote but I believe it's better to be humble than glamorous.

I'll also admit the novel is not perfect, his pacing is a bit off sometimes. There are times when banter or his thorough essays seem to get in the way of the story. But it's not all serious philosophy theme, there are witty remarks and quips along the story like one actress meditate a la "The Secrets", a model salary is too high it will cause inflation and my favorite; 46 definitions of "normal". The whole point is to show how futile and how stupid vanity is. There are also emotional moments when you feel sympathy for the characters because it's presented in such warm and heartfelt way.

If the world is as shallow and pretentious as portrayed, I take comfort and thank myself for being me. I'm glad that I can eat anything I want, except seafood TT. Watch movie and play video games when I want. Able to put on hand-free and just listen to my favorite song whenever and no matter what happen. Have enough to provide for my little needs. I'm far from perfect, I'm not even that great, I want and I will be better, but for now and many years to come, there is no one I rather be other than myself. Accept yourself for your true self.

Is Korea a different planet?...

Is Korea a different planet?...

I always like Korean manhwa style like this piece from Youn in Wan's Shin Angyo Onshi and Hyung Tae Kim's Magna Carta. The style is complex, beautiful and more realist than most manga. Although sometime it's hard to believe the outfit or the accessories, like the claw and bastard sword here.

It also show really looong legs... But I'm not complaining.. I'm so glad this one is finished.:iconhappytearsplz

Woohoo.. Second time isn't a fluke. I think I can do this..

From this image..

Recently I saw Animax Live Power Music or something.. It's a concert show that feature a bunch of girl band from Korea. I already saw K-pop a bunch of time but never in marathon concert. The thing is there must be ton of hot chick there. Okay let say there are 7-8 groups consist of 4-9 girls, add background dancers, the audience (yes even the audience are hot chick, maybe artist). There's gotta be more than hundreds of them.

Am I missing something here? I don't remember when IPS class "South Korea, nation income: rice, electronic, hot chicks!!". Forget about redenominasi or some crap when you scratch 000 from rupiah, forget exploding gas tank bomb, we need to import them from Korea fast!! Who's with me!!No, I apologize. It's insensitive and shallow thing to say.. But I bet my usual demographic enjoyed it.. Hah admit it, you are smiling just now.

Okay seriously now. I used to like J-pop more, I still do listen to mostly Japan, but there's no denying that Korea gained a lot of popularity nowadays.. okay I mean years. The thing about K-pop is it's more easy to listen to, more accessible and appeal to wide variety of age. Japan has some good artist but it seems that aside from some, most of them are stuck in one area and don't explore. Many Japanese boy band just scream and not much melody. When I download 10 random songs based on rating on whichever site, maybe just one that I really like.

I never become any artist fans.. Maybe RSP, they are Pop, Hip Hop and R'n'B group. They have distinct style and very energetic. And Yui, young female singer / guitarist. You can feel her emotion in "Again" and while some artist just change some arrangement and call it Remix, she actually sing the whole song again with acoustic. Try searching for RSP song "Go On Baby" (I don't have the link). SNSD Gee and Genie are infectious and catchy. The choreography for both of them are great.. If they can pull it off one more time..

.. I'll be officially a fans..

It's not just music, Korean art is also superb. See picture above, the original one, compare to Big 3 manga OneNaruBleach. Does any of them compare? Maybe Death Note? Close but no.. The closest mangas with just equal detail and semi-realist are Vagabond and Gantz, but SAO is just more likeable, imo... Ugh I just realize no more free Vagabond TT..

This is actually very good.

The same with game. If you play any MMO, there is a great chance that it's from Korea or have arts which are designed by Korean. I think the best is Magna Carta. Very vibrant color and detail. The guys looks like girls, the girls looks like porn stars.. Hey but who am I to judge? If only the games has the same team as FF, it could be epic. I've seen the artwork of FF and Magna Carta is just about the same level.

On first glance, they are both girls.. Okay it's last time I kid about Calintz's sex.. Maybe Mwahahahahah

Okay I guess that's all.. I'm tired from drawing that pic.. Ahh if someone can kidnap me and toss me to Korea.. I won't survive, don't know any Korean TT.. Okay if you read this far, can I ask if you find link to download the Animax show, please send it to me. The songs are remix and it's kinda good, yeah I didn't expect Animax show to be that good. Maybe someone who allegedly self proclaimed "finder to everything free" can help me out here, NO you don't get to charge, see FREE in the sentence..

For everything that is holy: DON'T WATCH LAST AIRBENDER!

I have invested my money and regretted it on many occasions, I have spent 14k for a hunk of meat that sounded cool and looked like steak in the pamphlet, I have spent 20k on cd of anime OST that I could download for free, I've spent 50k on math homework sold by a bear.. But I have never NEVER felt such anguish, betrayal and agony as the like of watching The Last Airbender. It stands tall at whooping 80k for 3D at Blitz. I will never recover.

Leave it to Hollywood to screw anime, no matter Japan or US. If you haven't watch Avatar, it's kind of big deal in US, like the best animation or TV show, basically Nickelodeon version of FMA: Brotherhood. I don't watch it often, but when I do, it's brimming with humor, wit and sense of epic rarely seen in children show. In fact the humor is fresh and mature, it's not without flaws but it's engaging. I don't watch full season but I can say that it's probably best animation from US.

But when you see the movie, ugh it's terrible.. The story just detaches from emotion, humor and barely has any decent acting. The flashy CG doesn't work, albeit there are some good moments, but they can't save this movie from oblivion. The acting first, man.. It sucks so bad, aside from cosmetic and minor resemblances, the chars are anything but their anime counterpart. I don't want to specify one by one, they all suck, but the worst is Aang (which is spelled wrong, the main character name SPELLED WRONG).

Aang in animation is lively, cheerful and playful. Aang in movie is emo, sad and confused. Every time he got close-up, I facepalmed. Almost every shot of him pictured him gasping, eyes widen and just confuse.. No ounce of charisma.. Why didn't they cast Asian boy for him, for the entire cast even, is beyond me.. Rasist!!!! (joke) The bit of salvation comes in form of Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) he put such conviction in his character that it's quiet believable especially when he tells his childhood story. But with such abysmal script it just becomes slightly decent, way off from his role in Slumdog.

This is facepalm.

Then the script and directing.. oghhh.. I can't believe this is the guy who did Sixth Sense, M.Night Shm.. Shymah... whatever.. It's bad, bloody atrocious "quote Simon Cowell bad comments for one season of Idol".. The script feels rush.. Soka falls in love with some princess, that's it, no scene, just rushes to make a point. No impact, not relateable at all. The CG is not spectacular, it's watchable but far from good.

The fight scene has some similarity to original version, there's martial art aspect to it. But maybe some adjustment is needed, scratch the maybe, it must. It works in cartoon, but to see the actors do martial art routines for every bending is tiresome and unrealistic. There is no sense of realism and danger, even Inception and Bourne can do miles better without CG. If I see my enemies do 5-10 seconds dance to summon fireball or some shit, I'll spear them, not just stand around and oohhh ahhhh..

If your friend, girlfriend, family ask you or some stranger point a gun at your face, I understand if you have to watch it. But NEVER EVER watch it in 3D, I thought it'd cover the suckiness, but noo.. The only thing 3D is preview of other movies at beginning and the subtitle.. Yeah the letters are coming out to your face, superb!!. I think it's even worse with 3D, the black drab background is enhanced more and without those stupid glasses, the image is awful. I really though mine were broken..

The only things I got from this are sore eyes, headache, back pain, twice almost vomit, thrice almost asleep, my cough returned and I lost some faith in humanity. Next time you want to watch new movie, please visit these site:
1. http://movies.ign.com/
It has three reviews from US, UK and AUS. Quiet dependable and trustworthy.
2. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/
If you have more time, view this one. It's compilation of dozens or even over 100 professional reviews. It can't go wrong.

I disregarded it and met such sad fate... Spread the word to everyone you know.
It says it all

Best Directors 2

Okay I admit I kinda messed up on this one :iconruncryplz: Especially that hair.. veil.. whatever that thing is.. Maybe it's too early to do something this complex. I don't know the face anatomy is okay I guess, but something's odd.. It just doesn't look exactly like her, the expression..

Well I need more practice, preferably on semi-realist first.. But I already finish it, at least I can get feedback or critique. So any advice will be much appreciated :iconarigatouplz:
http://vividobscura.deviantart.com/#/d2vm5ua

It could be better..

From this image.. sigh.. I really don't want to show this..

Okay for those who are insensitive among you, don't send "you suck" reply.. If you can't resist the urge, comment something that I can actually use to be better.. Continuing on top directors..

3. James Cameron

If a guy scored two best selling movies of all time, you know he did something right. Okay to be fair, his strong trait doesn't lie on story, but the presentation itself. Look at Titanic, everyone knew it's gonna sink, it's a major spoiler for plot. It could be turn into advantage though, everyone would be expecting the moment it sink and whether the characters survive. For you who haven't watch, Jack didn't survive. Spoiler alert.

In case of Avatar, the story is overused. I can name three movies with similar plot and different setting, Last Samurai, Dances With Wolf and Pocahontas. The way the story is told is what matters. It shows that classic concept can be told and re-told with new flair. It's predictable, I know, but can you say the movie itself, act of creating a genuine world and physic engine, can you say that's not commitment. Btw he also directed, Terminator series, Aliens, True Lies (quiet good for 90 mov.. because of Jamie Lee dance scene)..

Awww.. Blue alien.. It's not fetish at all, thanks to Cameron

2. Guillermo Del Toro

Imagine if all fairy tale was told with blood and a sense of violence. Not the over-the-top violence but more subtle unique and fresh. Ah the world will be more beautiful place. It could happen though, just give this guy a bunch of money. His most remarkable work is Pan's Labyrinth. It has this modern fairy tale vibe, it tells a story of a little girl in Nazi era. His take on balanced cruelty and innocence is brilliant, truly you'll wonder if this place actually exist. It reminds me of American McGee's Alice. It's romantic in some perverse kinda way.

He also directed Hellboy. You might realize his color tone and mystical creatures. He doesn't rely on gore, although there's plenty in his movies, but more to quality than spam gruesome deaths. The timing and act are great, while it's not blood bath, you get the sense of the impact more. He also worked on Blade 2, ever wonder why it way better from Blade 1 and 3? Now you know, okay Donnie Yen choreograph helped too. He confirm that he's also working on games now.. Man, first time I'm excited for a game which haven't been named yet.

Why this is less popular than Twi.. Twili.... Ugh I can't even say it..

1. Christopher Nolan

Is it really any doubt I'd choose Nolan as my first? This guy is awesome. He doesn't rely on cheap CG, the story is awesome, he directed so well that the whole cast feels natural, the pacing is great, not a moment spared.. I can go on and on..

Inception for Oscar!!!

Why no Oscar for Dark Knight!!!!

You might miss this one... It's worth it

I haven't watch this one.. Dammit should have bought it a few hours ago.. oh well...

Best Director.. Imo..

Slight improvement.. But still not good enough. I'm not too confident about my coloring. I found a couple of tips and I'm more used to using photoshop. Next time should be better. Hmm maybe I should thank certain bear for CS5, it's more efficient I think.. Hmm maybe not.. I never get BlazBlue / Guilty Gear art, they are odd.. They seem off somehow..

Coloring is more tiring, the sketch was done in 1 hour, the coloring was almost a day... sigh -_-".. it's full body so it's expected. I'm concern about the belt. When I did Sando, I somehow managed to drew her buckles, strapes and cape which are more complex than these two simple belts, but the beltss don't come out as good.. Gahhh!! SLAP! STAB!!! DIES......

Next one will be err.... Ashe from FF12 or Sando again

From this image..

So best directors.. It's purely my own choice so there are a lot more talented directors out there..

6. J.J.Abrams

My favorite movies from him are Mission Impossible 3, Star Trek, Cloverfield, Armageddon and TV show Lost. This guy is action sci-fi champ, many of his movies has certain realistic feel. His color palette is bright but not too over vibrant. His pace is fast and doesn't dwell on single character even though he has worked with numerous talented actors. One of the more revolutionary movie is Cloverfield, shot entirely on first person view, emphasis on immersion and aforementioned realistic feel. He shows that he doesn't always rely on C.G and capable on directing more drama although still has sci-fi television show, Lost.

Are you.... Lost..? They say it's on Indonesia

5. Zack Snyder

My favorite movies are 300 and Dawn of The Dead. This guy is versatile, his first movie was Dawn of The Dead, one of the best horror movie. It's very different than most scare-fest, because the characters and simple concept of trapped in a mall with zombies. Zombies is one of the most used concept ever, but a brilliant director can re-told a story so well that it becomes fresh again. His second movie is 300. A very different approach from Dawn, he used almost all CG but the simple concept remains. In near future I'm sure there will be more from him.

Grrroar.. After this I'll play multiple chick drama movies... Groooarrr

4. Quentin Tarantino

No, not because he stole my name... My favorite movies are Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, Sin City (guest director). Hmm how to describe him, he's weird. He has certain anime influence on his works. Kill Bill blatantly uses anime mid-way. Inglorious uses chapter and comic book approach. He got the violence category down. The dialogue on his works are engaging and the characters are over-the-top. I don't know he just seems.. right..

We'll do one thang and one thang only...

Others coming soon.. This note is short. FB screwed me, lag and error.. I lost interest and time..
